Vinyl will stick to most woods depending on the surface of the wood. It’s important for it to be smooth. Rough wood with lots of sawdust and chips on it will be very problematic in terms of the vinyl sticking down long term. The rough surface does not allow for an even stick.The smoother the better. The harder the wood the better in most cases as well, since the wood is less likely to chip.
How To Clean Your Surface
To get the best results when applying vinyl to wood you need to make sure the surface has been cleaned thoroughly. Make sure to remove any dust. For the best results use a methylated spirit. Containing alcohol it’s the perfect way to break down any hard to remove dirt. You should try to avoid using a cleaner which contains oil. Using a cleaner with oil will affect the adhesive of your vinyl sticker. This could affect the performance of the sticker. To improve the stickiness of the vinyl, varnish the wood before applying it. Using a sealer will also help it stick. This will improve the results and enhance its lifespan once applied.

Can wood (pine) be totally covered with vinyl, as in kitchen units, or would it need space to expand and contract?
Thanks for your comment Mandi. That’s a good question. Vinyl is a perfect way to cover old pine kitchen cabinets. Pine should not expand and contract very much in a kitchen so the effect of that on the vinyl will be negligible. Especially with higher quality vinyl that is not prone to shrinkage. I want to wrap a wardrobe with vinyl, however, I am a bit skeptical about removing the vinyl, will this damage the wardrobe at all?
Hi Despina. This is a good question and one we get all the time. It really depends on the surface type and paintwork of your wardrobe. Hi Benjamin – I am thinking of wrapping a few drawers of indo teak wood with white gloss vinyl (instead of treating the teak, applying a primer, etc.) However, the teak is known to release some oil. Would this affect the attachment of the vinyl? What do you recommend?
Hi Freek. Very good question! Vinyl does not react well to the release of oils underneath the adhesive so this is an important consideration when vinyl wrapping your drawers. There are certain types of vinyl that will work much better than others in this case and other methods may work to seal in the oils before applying the vinyl wrap to your furniture. The polish on the external surface of the windows facing harsh summer sunlight does not last long. Even with PU coating on the polish of the wooden windows & doors on the external side lose their shine with in 2 years. Can vinyl coating on the external surface help me out & for how long will it sustain ?
I want to apply a (rather thin) vinyl self-adhesive membrane like Fablon onto unfinished OSB for interior use as a table top. I am not concerned about the finish only that the membrane adheres satisfactorily, in providing a barrier to spills etc and to stabilise the strands a little. Is it necessary to apply an initial undercoat or stabilizer.

Hi, would you recommend what to use to glue a wrap vinyl sticker to a MDF cabinet? Do you apply glue to both surfaces, Do you sand the MDF?

You shouldn’t have to add glue to a vinyl sticker to wrap an MDF cabinet Cristian. Your vinyl should stick directly to the surface with the adhesive already on it. You should not have to sand the MDF as it is already smooth enough for vinyl to stick to. Hope that helps!
